I made very good experiences with Receivelinks.
After 3 month I see dramatically increase in search linsting placement on Google and 10 times more visitors on the test site I had before for the test site.
This method ismuch more powerful than directory listing and traditionally link exchange, and also than article submissions.

All the long tail keyword phrases I added to the link exchange are now uder the first 30 search listings in Google, before they were > 100.

I also gave LinkVault a try, but I cannot recommend this service, I don't get any answer to my support requests from them at all.

some people use social bookmarking to be told what people they like are looking at etc. So when it gets bookmarked it drives traffic and if the story is good it often gets written about by some of these people

As far as i know Blogging, Social Bookmarking, Social Media, Forum Posting and Linkbait are one of the most effective link build strategies.

forum posting is okay for sites that allow signature or link drops... we don't and many others restrict them too....

I can't suggest u latest link building technique because its depend on your site. If your site is interesting so everyone will give u link easily then u can use one way linking and there is no hard work but if your site not so much interesting so u have much hard work u should use reciprocal linking and give your link of high pr sites and add them links. show your site in your every details in forum. keep in touch ragulerly in forums.

Forum Discussions and Blog Comments are waste because it has nofollow attribute most of the time.

Paid Advertisement does not have any value since google are able to detect whether it is sponsored ad or not.
