100 link "rule" - does nofollow matter?

So there's an unofficial "rule" that the engines don't follow links on a page after the first 100 or so they find.

Not sure how real it is, but for the sake of this conversation, let's assume it's real.

The question is:

If you have 175 links on a page, and you nofollow the first 125, for example, does the crawler skip them and follow your other 50 links as if they were the ONLY 50 links on the page (outbound, of course)?

Mostly a theory question, but one I found intriguing and didn't have an immediate answer for.

Please discuss.

Re: 100 link "rule" - does nofollow matter?

I'm not sure too many people would have an immediate answer for this as the supposed 100-link limit wouldn't apply to most folks.

If you have the resources you can always try to set up a test of some sort, shouldn't be too difficult.

Re: 100 link "rule" - does nofollow matter?

using no follow will not stop the count from the little I have seen but 100 is just a suggested number..... if anything I would use a metatag to nofollow and no index and then use a tag in the copy to counter that for the ones you do

I second AussieWebmaster.

Besides, there isn't a 100 limit anymore with Google although a lot of people still follow that principle so that each link on that page has some measurable juice left.

The greater problem is that many links on a page spell "directory" to G and your chances of attracting a greybar go up rapidly.

New rule: If you're competing in the same SERPs as I am, never get more than 100 backlinks!
